http://screenpainthd.com/blog/?p=224

Call me crazy, but I hardly go to the movie theater anymore. Unless it is a movie that I'm absolutely dying to see (Hunger Games, anyone??), I would much rather watch a movie at home than in the theater. Waiting in long lines to get my tickets, and then again to get my snacks: not fun. Because I'm not willing to get to the theater hours before the movie actually starts, many times I'm left scouring the rows for open seats. And if I want to go with a few friends, then there is no option but to get there early, or we're all stuck at opposite ends of the theater... or, even worse, sitting in the front row.

Then there are the annoying, loud teenagers talking through the entire movie, and the fact that I always end up sitting in front of that one kid who won't stop kicking my seat. Let's not even bring up the fact that I'm guaranteed to need to go to the bathroom right when the movie starts getting good.

As I said... the movie theater is not my favorite thing. That is why my husband and I almost always watch our movies at home. We'll still have our date nights... go out and get dinner, and sometimes dessert. But at the end of the night, when it's time for the movie... time to head home.

Here are just 15 of the many reasons to watch a movie at home:

Relaxing. We, like most people I think, usually watch our movies at the end of the night. By that time, I am usually exhausted from a long day of work. So, the idea of snuggling in front of a movie with my favorite blanket, a cup of tea or hot cocoa, and some popcorn sounds great! But that is the exact opposite of what the experience in a movie theater is.

Comfort. As hard as they try, movie theater seats are just not comfortable. And am I the only one who avoids resting my head against the back of the seat for fear of lice or bedbugs? Ok, even if that's just me, I don't think that when anyone thinks of a movie theater that "comfort" is one of the first words that come to mind. But when thinking of my home theater, living room, or bedroom? Yep! Comfort! When watching a movie I would much rather be curled up on my couch than in a movie theater.

Pajamas, baby! When my husband and I go out on date nights, or when I go out with my friends, I usually like to dress up. But after filling up on dinner, and that piece of cheesecake that I know I shouldn't have but I always do anyway, I really don't want to keep those jeans buttoned up! (I know that you know what I'm talking about here). Instead, kicking those heels off, letting my hair down, and throwing on some sweats... ah, yeah, much better. I know that can go along with the whole comfort idea... but for me this is enough of a benefit to be counted on its own!

Saves money. The overpriced tickets at the movie theater are enough to keep me away. When I can have an even better experience at home, there are much better things I'd rather do with my money to spend it at a movie theater. The tickets aren't just the problem, the snacks are extremely overpriced too! There is always the option of the dollar theaters. But their chairs are even more uncomfortable, their floors are sticky, and their screens show a poor quality image.

Then there's gas money getting there & back, and convenience fees if you purchase online. And what about families with children? Now not only are you paying close to $10 a ticket, but let's multiply that by 3, 4, 5, 6... and if you want to leave them at home let's add on babysitting fees. Save the money and watch at home.

You control the snacks. This could be broken down into a few different benefits: cost, taste, & health. As I just discussed, movie theater snacks are unbelievably overpriced! And I've heard that some theaters are getting security and searching people's purses before movies to make sure they're not sneaking snacks in, so that idea is out. Having these same snacks at home saves so much money.

Next is taste. When we're all being honest with ourselves, movie theater snacks really aren't that great! Soggy popcorn with over-salty butter substitute (what is that stuff made of, anyway?). Stale tortilla chips with "cheese" sauce? Watered down soda? No, thanks. Instead, what about fresh-popped popcorn topped with REAL melted butter? You can even come up with your own signature flavors! Try making it spicy with different spices. Or sweet with melted chocolate and/or marshmallows. Or add coconut oil and shredded coconut! Or forget about the popcorn and make a cake! :)

On to health. What are the options at movie theaters? Nachos, popcorn doused in butter, hot dogs, soda, and candy. Again, make these same snacks (or better ones) at home! Even if you're going for the same movie-theater snacks, you can make them with much less preservatives, salt, fat, etc at home. It's always nice to know what is going into the food you are feeding yourself and your family. And if health is really a concern for you, then eating at the theater isn't even an option. Now you can make healthy snacks that you can enjoy!

Every seat is a good seat. As I discussed above, for many movies, you have to show up way in advance to get decent seats, and/or seats next to the people you want to sit by. Well, that problem is completely wiped away when watching at home! You control the seating, and you don't have to arrive ahead of time to save seats!

No crying babies. There are very few things as distracting when trying to watch a movie as a crying baby (or a toddler asking questions, or a teeny bopper snickering with their friends). Sure, babies and kids (maybe not teeny boppers, but definitely the other two), are very cute! But they're not exactly what I'm paying to listen to. When you're at home, you can control the noise. And if you have kids of your own, you can pause the movie to answer their questions, or wait to watch the movie until they're in bed.

Watch what you want, when you want. Have you ever gotten all geared up, planning a date night or night out with friends to go see a movie, only to realize there really isn't anything good in the theater? Well, there are so many more options at the movie store (or on your DVR)! As I said before, every once in a while there is a movie that I'm really excited to see and I will see it in the theater (going to see Avengers this weekend!). But other than that, I'm usually just fine waiting until it comes out on video. Especially once you get in the habit of doing this. Because then you're too busy watching the movies that came out two months ago to worry about what's in the theater at the moment. Again, this won't apply for the movie that all of your friends will be talking about, or that you've been dying to see. But other than that, you're not missing out waiting a month or two.

Also, you're not limited to whatever genre happens to be popular at the moment. It seems like all of the chick flics come out right at the same time! And then comes the season for horror movies, then on to the end-of-the-world movies. What if I'm in the mood for a Christmas movie in June? No problem, just pop one in the DVD player!

Talk all you want. People who talk during a movie are SOO annoying! Unless it's me. Then I'm totally justified needing my question answered right at that moment. Don't be that person that talks during the movie. I promise that other people are hating you when you do that. But when you're at home, you can pause the movie for a second if you really need to ask a question. Or you can chat for a sec during a really boring part.

Cuddle time! Isn't cuddling the best part of watching a movie?? When watching movies at home, you don't have to worry about that awkward arm rest getting in the way of you and your sweetheart. :)

Bathroom breaks. When you're at the theater, you better make sure you get it all out before the movie starts! There's nothing worse than a movie finally getting to the good part, and realizing that you have to go to the bathroom! Well, no worries with that when you're watching at home. Just pause the movie, do your business, and get back to the action. Yes, you might annoy your friends and family that you're watching with, but it's much better than paying $10 for a movie and having to miss something important because nature called.

Ok if you fall asleep. I'm like an old lady. One minute I'm awake, the next I'm asleep. I have literally fallen asleep in the middle of conversations... numerous times. It drives my husband crazy. And to me, movies are like lullabies. They just put me straight to sleep! Usually I'm ok in movie theaters (so uncomfortable!), but I have friends that have fallen asleep in the theater in the middle of a movie they were super excited to see. If you are one of these people, just watch it at home! That way, you can fall asleep and finish it off the next night!

Ability to rewind. I've gotten so used to my DVR that I try to rewind everything nowadays! When listening to the radio, I've reached for the rewind button before... only to feel like a complete dork. Sometimes when I'm in the movie theater, I really really wish I had a rewind button for the movie. Think about when when you're watching a movie where you're trying to piece everything together, and you wish you could just rewind to make sure you heard that one sentence right. Or when someone is talking during a really important part. Well, that becomes a reality when you're watching at home! Miss an important part? Rewind.

Spend time with the family. If you have a family, you know how difficult it can be to get the whole family together for a movie. Mainly, it's just so darn expensive! And then it can be next to impossible to find a movie that the whole family can agree on. Imagine spending all that money on a movie that only a couple members of the family are actually excited to see. Well, when you're watching at home, that isn't nearly as much of a concern. Why not have a weekly or monthly family movie night? Pop some popcorn, make some root beer floats, and enjoy. You can rotate every time, letting a different family member pick the movie each time. With the compromise, and the great home-made snacks... and the money savings, everyone can be happy!

Impress neighbors. If you are watching enough movies at home, and saving all that money that you would have spent at the theater, over time you can save enough money to build a home theater in your house! Then, watching movies at home will be even more enjoyable. Then you'll get the true feel of watching a movie at the theater... but without the downsides to the theater. And on top of all of the benefits listed above, you will now become the envy of the neighborhood (let's be honest, we all want that). Invite your neighbors over for a movie night, and they will all be talking about your home theater.

So, the next time you are trying to decide whether to head to the theater or watch at home... keep those pajamas on and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.

Well, we missed a few months on our monthly home theater inspiration posts, but now it's back! :) I'm sure many of you have already seen this image floating around on Pinterest.

In actuality, this space isn't a home theater, it is a living room, but we thought it would be great inspiration for a home theater!

What we like about this home theater:

Cost. This theater room could be very inexpensive to do (paint some recycled pallets, and you could make your own seat cushions. Add a couple throw pillows, and you’re in business!). Also, this is such an inexpensive way to create stadium-style seating in your room. We all love the idea of stadium seating, but it can be rather expensive to build your floors out for stadium seating. With this room, you get the stadium seating at a fraction of the cost! Just stack 3 pallets, then 2, then one... and instant stadium seating!

Functionality. This makes a great home theater room. You have the stadium seating, so you don't have to worry about anyone not being able to see the movie. The great thing about this idea, is it can work in any size room. Have a small room? Just use a few pallets. Need to be able to seat more people? Build the seats 3 pallets wide, and even up to 4 pallets high. With functionality should always also come comfort, and these seats look extremely comfortable. P.s... need somewhere for those unexpected visitors to sleep? Or having a sleepover with your zillion nieces and nephews? This room could also double as a pseudo-guest room!

Creativity & Style. Talk about creativity and style! This room gets 5 stars on the originality front. This room is very impressive and surprising. Walking into this room, this just isn't a style you see everyday. With painting the pallets, you could paint them any color you want, so that is also an added bonus. Go with a simple white and neutral cushions like in the picture, or really up the wow factor by painting the pallets a bright color and having your cushions in a bold fabric! If you're using this idea in a home theater room instead of, say, your living room, you really can get away with much more creative and bold choices, so why not go for it!

Good for the Environment. Reduce, reuse, recycle, right? Can't go wrong with recycled pallets used as furniture! :)

With summer approaching quickly, our minds are all turning to activities we can do outside. During the day, the possibilities are endless: there are picnics, zoos, bike rides, hikes, etc.

And if you have a swimming pool or lake within driving distance, you pretty much have every day for the rest of the summer planned! But what about night time? Summer nights can sometimes be difficult to plan an activity for. Because we still want to enjoy the beautiful weather outside, but many times we're pretty exhausted from a day of running (or swimming) around in the sun.

Well, what about watching a movie? Ok, so of course you just answered, "But it's summer! I don't want to spend my summer cooped up in a movie theater! I only have a few months of this beautiful weather!" Let's take that idea a step further... why not watch a movie outside? Now, if you have an drive-in or outdoor movie venue nearby that's great. But there are still options if you don't. You can absolutely build your own outdoor movie theater. This way, you have something to do any time you need a fun activity on a summer night. Turn your house into the new go-to place for all of your friends and family (or just you and the kids)... build your very own outdoor movie theater!

It can be extremely easy and inexpensive to build your own outdoor movie theater. It can be done in very few steps, and you don’t need very many components to make it a successful attraction. As with anything else, there are cheap options, as well as ways to up the wow factor a bit. Let's explore a few options.

Seats

The seating can be done as simply, or as extravagantly, as you like. Something as basic as blankets on the grass could totally be sufficient. Fold-down lawn chairs or camping chairs would also work.

A great option is to purchase comfortable outdoor lawn furniture and have that double as your outdoor theater seating. If you watch the sales, or get them at the end of the season, it is amazing the prices you can find on this type of furniture. Outdoor lawn furniture is sturdy and can stand up to the elements, but it is also comfortable. You can have your furniture set up around each other, the way that you would normally use it, and then move it into rows quickly when you want to watch a movie.

If you really want to up that wow factor, and have it feel more like an actual movie theater, you can create your own outdoor seating that is stadium-style seating. There are two different ways you can do this:

First, and easiest (and less expensive), is to use pallets to create stadium-style seats.

As you can see in the picture, you just take pallets, and stack them on top of each other to create the stadium effect. You can purchase cushions already made, or you can make your own pretty easily. Just make sure you are using heavy duty fabric that is suitable for outdoor use.

If you don't want to make your own, you can always hire a professional company to come build stadium seating for you. This can be as basic or extravagant as you want. You can do basic stadium-style seating (think seating at a Junior High football field). Or, if you really want to impress, you can build stadium seats that have the fold down style seats you see in movie theaters.

Projector

You want to make sure to buy a sturdy projector that can be out in the heat. I recommend having a permanent mount (or even just a table you place it on!) for your projector outside, but keeping the projector inside. For this purpose, a mini projector would be ideal. Mini projectors are lightweight, don't take up a lot of space, and are generally easy to use. With something that you are going to moving in and out of the house on a regular basis (possibly every day?), it is nice to have something simple and compact.

Screen

It can be difficult to find a screen that you can use outdoors. To get a good quality outdoor projector screen you will have to spend a lot of money. And if you purchase an inexpensive "outdoor" screen, it will have a poorer image quality, and it won't really hold up to the elements. So, this is definitely a case where you would want to use exterior projection screen paint. Projector screen paint has a higher quality image than normal projector screens, and it costs much less money than you would spend on a screen.

Using projector-specific paint will give you a much higher quality image than, say, just a white sheet or piece of plywood painted with white paint. When you have a lot of natural light it can become very difficult to view a projection if you don't have projector-specific paint. So this becomes especially important when watching movies outside, because you can't control the amount of light (remember, even the moon provides light!), so you want to make sure you have a paint with high-contrast ability. You don't want to get all set up outside only to realize that there is too much light for you to actually see your movie!

This screen paint is made specifically for the outdoors, so it is much more durable than normal paints. And that way you don't have to worry about your screen that you spent hundreds of dollars on ripping in the wind. You can use this paint on any porous surface (wood, concrete, drywall, etc). You can purchase a large sheet of material at the hardwood store and paint that. Don't forget the primer, and after a couple coats of paint you have your very own outdoor theater screen. Here is a link to our external screen paint:

Snacks

Don’t forget the snacks! Just like with any movie, people immediately get the "munchies" when watching a movie outside. You don't want people tracking dirt in and out of your house, so make sure to have snacks and drinks accessible to your outside movie watchers. Let's be honest, it's not a movie without the treats! A few coolers filled with ice and drinks and placed outside are great. Unlike watching a movie inside, messy treats don't cause as bad of issues when you are watching outside. So this is a great time to break out the classic summer treats: watermelon and popsicles, while not great while watching a movie on the couch, are perfect snacks for outdoor movie watching. Or have a barbecue with all the messy foods you wouldn't want to eat inside: gooey cheese burgers, corn on the cob, and wings would be great to eat while watching a movie outside! And of course, as with any movie, don't forget the popcorn!

There are so many choices to make when building a home theater. When we think of a home theater, many of us think of the technical aspects: the projector, the sound system, the lighting, the screen, etc. Those technical things are very important. But don't overlook another very important aspect to the home theater: the seating!

When planning and weighing all your options for your home theater, don't forget to take time to really consider what type of seating you want. Seating really is one of the most important components to your home theater. Think about it, that is where you will be spending your time! Sure, the sound and the picture are very important. But if your seats aren't exactly what you were hoping for, you will find yourself spending less and less time in them.

Two important aspects to consider when choosing your home theater seats are comfort and fabric.

Comfort.

Comfort is the most important aspect to any type of furniture. I mean, what good is a super stylish reclining theater sofa if you can't bear the thought of actually sitting it in? When shopping for home theater seats, make your first priority comfort. If you are shopping in an actual store, make sure you sit in every seat you consider buying! Think of yourself spending two to three hours at a time in this chair. If you don't feel like you just melt into the chair, odds are you might not be able to make it through a whole movie in it! If you are shopping online for seating, read all of the comments and reviews on the chair. Comfort is a highly discussed item when it comes to online furniture, so it should be pretty easy to get a good idea of the comfort level of theater seating, even if you are buying online.

Fabric.

Another important aspect to home theater seating is the fabric choice. You can purchase home theater seats in leather, fabric, and microfiber. The idea is that you will be keeping these same seats for quite a long time, so make sure you choose the fabric that is best for you. I think the microfiber is the most comfortable of the options. But, you also need to take into consideration how easy they are to clean. To get the full theater experience, you will probably want to allow drinks and treats in your home theater. When watching movies in a dark home theater, spills are going to happen, maybe even on a regular basis. So, if that is the case, you might want to opt for leather, because the spills from drinks and treats will just slide right off.

Comfort and fabric choice are very important when choosing your home theater seats. But what type of seats are you going to go for? With home theater seats, there are more options than just your individual recliner, and your sectional. Let's explore a few of your options:

Sofa.

One of the first choices that comes to mind is the classic sofa. This is a basic option that you can find at any furniture store, in any fabric, color, size, etc that you are looking for. These come in reclining/non reclining, and a variety of price options. Classic and comfortable, this is the basic option for the basic home theater. I also really like the sofas with a chaise at the end. Extra comfort!

image via Pinterest.com

Individual Chairs.

Another common option are a few individual chairs. This gives a bit more of a movie theater feel, with each person having their own individual seat. There are a lot of options with individual seats: normal sofa chairs, recliners, chaise seats, etc.

Theater Row Seats.

If you really want to hit home the movie theater feel, then go with the theater-style row seats. For home theaters, they make very comfortable options. Each seat typically reclines, with each seat having its own cup holder.

image via Houzz.com

Love Seat.

For a smaller home theater, a love seat is a great option. This takes up a small amount of room, but you are still able to snuggle with your special someone.

One Large Couch System.

Have you seen these large couch systems? Think about a sectional mixed with a bed! Full-on cushions from head to foot. These are the most comfortable looking pieces of furniture I've ever seen in my life! But beware, if you are one who falls asleep easy in movies, this might be even too comfortable...

image via Pinterest.com

Fold-Down Seats.

In case you are one of those who falls asleep easily, why not try movie-theater style fold-down seats? Again, use this option if you really want to drive the movie theater feel home. You can purchase fold-down seats that look just like the ones you'd find in a traditional movie theater. These aren't quite as comfortable as some of the other options, but it really plays up the movie theater feel.

Motion Theater Seats.

Really want to impress your friends? Invest in some motion theater seats. You can purchase motion seats, or just a motion platform, to incorporate motions and rumbles that are programmed for the movie you are watching. Feel like you are really IN the movie!

image via Plundertech.com

Large Bean bag.

Large bean bags are very comfortable. They're not like the huge couch option where they're so comfortable you'll instantly fall asleep, but definitely something you can look forward to spending a couple hours in.

Futon.

Many of us build our home theaters in our basements, and we might not have the room to also have a separate guest room in our house. Your basement can still serve both purposes! Have a futon as one of your main home theater seats. That way, you’re not using up much-needed space with a bed, and you’re not spending your money on an expensive pull-out couch.

Massage Chairs.

Want to really spoil your guests? Why not treat them to a massage while they watch the movie! A chair that massages, and/or has heat/cool controls is the ultimate in pampering. Imagine watching a movie in a chair that will massage your sore muscles, or that you can set it to your perfect temperature? Count me in!

Rock Pillows.

There is a company that makes pillows that look just like rocks. They come in several different sizes and colors. I really like these to throw in the corner, and pull them out when you have unexpected company over to watch a movie.

image via Houzz.com

Pallets With Cushions.

A new trend that is popping up everywhere is to use pallets for furniture. A fun and inexpensive way to furnish your home theater is to use pallets and cover them with cushions.

image via Pinterest.com

Lastly, also play with the idea of combining two or three of these seating options. Think about this: it might usually just be you and your spouse and/or family watching a movie, but sometimes you invite a group of your friends over for a big movie night. If that's the case, why not try this: buy one small sofa, or a couple recliners and place them in front of your tv or screen. Then, also purchase one or two large sectionals, or a couple rows of theater seats, and put them behind your smaller main seating area. That way, you have a nice, comfy area for you and your family to enjoy a movie together, but you also have options for when you have a larger group. If you don't want to spend the money on an extra sectional or theater row seats, think about having a couple large bean bags in the back for when you have guests over.

Is your living room feeling a bit drab lately? When you walk into it, do you wish there were more of a "wow" factor to it? Many of us choose conservative pieces of furniture, in neutral colors because we want something that we won't get sick of, or that will stand the test of time (will that bright red couch still be in style in a couple years?). After so many conservative choices, our living room can end up looking, well, boring.

You might be feeling a bit underwhelmed when looking at your living room, but you don't want to spend a lot of money with an all-out redesign. Even if you don’t have the funds for a complete overhaul, there are smaller, more affordable changes and upgrades you can make. Whether you want to spend just a few dollars and be more moderate in your changes, or if you are wanting to go a bit more aggressive and make changes that will really stand out, there are definitely changes you can make to your living room that will give it that new level excitement and visual appeal that it’s been needing!

Here are a few things to try, from cautious to adventurous:

Throw pillows. Throw pillows are one of the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to add a new feel or more excitement to your living room. You can either buy them (look for them on sale!), or you can make them for even cheaper.

Couch covers. If you weren't ready to completely commit to a lime-green couch, but you wouldn’t mind trying it for just a while, why not try couch covers? Again, these can be purchased for pretty cheap, or if you know how to sew you can make them yourself.

Exciting rug. If your whole living room is done in all black and white, why not try a bright blue rug? Or if your walls are neutral and you have a green couch, how about a bold printed rug?

Paint your coffee table. If you have an old coffee table that is getting a bit beat-up, you could paint that a bright color. Or, purchase one from your local thrift store and paint that. What a great way to add an exciting pop of color to the room!

New lamps. New lamps are another easy and inexpensive way to add a new feel, excitement, or a pop of color to your living room. Try chrome lamps in a cool geometric shape to make your room more modern, some large wrought iron lamps to make it more classy, or lamps with bright lamp shades for more color.

New paint. If you want to go more extreme, you can always repaint your living room. Paint is much easier to swap out than you might think. Of course it isn't as simple as, say, a new lamp shade, but if you are really ready for a change it's amazing what a different a new coat of paint can make!

Plasma TV. If you’re still living with a traditional box TV, and you have a bit of extra money to spend, try upgrading to a plasma TV. Plasma televisions make your space look so much more sleek and put together than a box TV.

Projector. If you already have a plasma TV but want to make even more of an impact, you can really elevate the room and impress your neighbors with a projector and some projector screen paint. Projectors add so much more of a "wow-factor" to your living room. And home theater screen paint isn't as bulky as a large pull-down projector screen (and it is much more durable), so it is a much better option for a living room. And, there are many cost-effective options for projectors nowadays, you can even find one for less than you would spend on a new TV!

If you think of your dream house, one of the things that will probably show up on your list of "necessities" is a home theater. A home theater can instantly make any house feel like your dream home.

More and more people nowadays are having theaters installed in their homes. Whether they hire a contractor to build it for them, or they build it themselves, home theaters are instant upgrades to a house that their friends will covet.

There are so many different things to choose from when building a theater in your home. So many choices to make! But when planning out your very own room that will make you feel like a millionaire, there are a few basics, as well as upgrades, that you want to make sure to have on your list. Here, in no particular order, are my top 10:

image via digsdigs.com

1. Reclining couch.

It doesn't matter how fancy your theater is. No one will want to watch a movie in it if they aren't comfortable. So, reclining couches are a necessity! Whether it's one large sectional, or several individual La-Z-Boys, make sure you find something that is comfortable, and that you can put your feet up in.

2. Projector.

Sorry to say, but no one will be impressed with just a basic flat screen. Don't go through all the trouble to build your own home theater, just to fall flat in the display category. There are many different projectors on the market today, so you should be able to find one that fits your needs and budget.

3. Food Station.

Am I the only one that thinks you can't have a good time without food? Don’t make your home theater too fancy that you don’t feel like you can eat in it. Whether you have a simple counter and sink where you can place food and rinse your dishes, or a full on area with a fridge and popcorn maker, make sure you make it easy on yourself to provide those necessary movie snacks.

4. Surround Sound.

Everyone knows that a home theater is no good without surround sound! To feel the full effect of your movies, you want very good quality speakers. Again, these can also be found at many different price ranges, so you should be able to find some good quality ones even if you don't have a lot to spend.

5. Soundproofing.

Unless you live in a mansion, odds are your house isn't big enough to completely get away from the loud noises of a theater room. Even if your theater is in your basement, it is hard to drown out the sounds of your movie. So, when you are installing your theater, make sure to install soundproofing columns. This way, you can watch Avatar as loud as you want to, without worrying about waking up Jr. in his bedroom upstairs.

6. Projector Screen Paint.

As discussed above, a projector is the best choice for your home theater. Home theater screen paint is the best choice for viewing that projector. Home theater screen paint provides high quality picture, without the hassle of a roll-down projector screen. It is a fraction of the cost of a traditional projector screen, it is easy to install (just paint on!), and doesn't have any of the same durability issues you face with a projection screen.

7. Dimming Lights.

When you are watching a thriller movie, you definitely want your lights all the way off. But, when you're watching a cartoon with the family, you want to have a little bit of light on... not so much that you can't see the movie, but enough so that you can see when Sally spills her drink, or when the twins start pinching each other. The perfect solution for this need of different lighting shades? Dimming lights. If you are wanting to keep it simple, you can even just buy a dimming switch and bulbs from Home Depot.

8. Storage.

One thing that some people don't think of when planning their theater is storage. You get the couches, the lighting, the projector... but where to put all of the DVD’s and games? If you think of this early enough in the planning process, you can build-in really cool storage areas. If not, you can purchase simple bookshelves or DVD cases.

9. Props/Theme.

How fun is it when you see a picture of a Star Wars themed home theater? Themed theaters aren't just for millionaires. You can go all-out with your theme, or purchase a few simple but fun props at the thrift store or on eBay. Whether you put a lot of your budget into a props, or just keep it simple, having some sort of theme in your home theater really can make it feel so much more fun and special.

10. Stage.

A stage is something that isn't always thought of when planning a home theater. But most of my favorite home theaters that I’ve seen have also included a stage. Stages in your home theater are perfect for your kids to play and practice on (you never know if one of them is going to want to be the next American Idol), or just for game nights with friends. You will forever be known as the go-to house for Charades night!
